Texas 25 TAC 417.47: Training Requirements for State Hospitals

By Crisis Prevention Institute | April 21, 2014 | Texas | In Effect
Texas 25 TAC 417.47: Training Requirements for State Hospitals
Texas Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 417 has added a new section, 417.47, which requires state hospitals to provide staff training on:
  • The uniqueness of the individuals state hospitals serve
  • Techniques for improving safety and quality of life for individuals with mental illness
  • The safe and proper use of restraints
  • Preventing and managing aggressive or violent behavior
  • Positive behavior support
  • Trauma-informed care

This new section also creates a requirement for employees to receive refresher training at least annually, in accordance with Texas Senate Bill 152, which was adopted in 2013. The legislation is intended to ensure that all state hospital staff have the skills to handle violent patient behavior in a manner that’s as safe as possible for everyone.

We Can Help You Comply With the Requirements!
Hospitals around the globe use our Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training program because it helps staff deepen their person-centered, trauma-informed approach to care. CPI training focuses on prevention and de-escalation techniques that help staff understand the roots of aggressive and violent patient behavior, and control their own responses to the behavior. The program’s techniques are also effective in both the prevention of and the safer, less-restrictive, last-resort use of physical restraint. Additionally, the training helps staff promote positive behavior and interact effectively and empathically with individuals who have experienced trauma.

Tailoring Training to Your Hospital’s Needs
CPI training can be tailored to your hospital’s needs. With our train-the-trainer option, select staff can be certified to teach the program to other staff on a continuing basis. We have numerous public programs coming up, and an on-site training option is also available.

Advanced Course
If you’re already a Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certified Instructor, you can share strategies with your staff from our advanced course, Trauma-Informed Care: Implications for CPI's Crisis Development ModelSM. This course dives deep into the influence of trauma on behavior and offers additional strategies to help you better serve individuals who have experienced traumatic events. Locate an upcoming public program or have us bring the training to you.
