CPI Responds to NY Public Employer Workplace Violence Prevention Law

August 07, 2009 | News

On June 7, 2006, New York enacted legislation creating a new section of the New York State Labor Law that requires public employers to minimize the risk of workplace violence and ensure that all New York State public workplaces are safer for the workers and the public they serve. The law, which was published in the state register on April 29, 2009, requires public employers to take specific actions including:

  • Perform a risk evaluation at each work site.
  • Develop a written workplace violence prevention program.
  • Train employees on how to avoid and respond to acts of violence.

As state agencies have been asked to have plans to comply in place by October 31, 2009, CPI has scheduled the following PrepareTraining® courses:

New York City

Buffalo

New York City

August 25-27

Sept. 15-17

Sept.  22-24

The CPI’s PrepareTraining® program is highly effective, adaptable training that can help organizations meet the requirements of the New York State Workplace Violence Prevention Law. The program utilizes CPI’s proven methods for managing disruptive behavior before it escalates to a potentially dangerous incident. With a core philosophy of Respect, Service, and Safety at Work®, the program offers proactive solutions so organizations can count on confident, well-trained employees who respond safely and consistently to a variety of challenging situations.

Like the New York legislators who crafted this law, CPI agrees that violence prevention and crisis intervention training should be an ongoing process—not a one-time event. Through the PrepareTraining® Instructor Certification Program, organizations gain the resources to train employees in house. The flexible curriculum offers Topic-Specific Modules to meaningfully meet the needs of a variety of employee groups.
