Workplace Violence as Part of Emergency Preparedness

By Judith Schubert

Hospitalsafe175.jpg"To help ensure safety during emergencies, organizations often train employees on what to do in the case of low occurrence, high impact events such as fires, weather events, or an active shooter scenario. The potential risk of these events cannot be understated in terms of the impact on the health care organization itself, the employees, and the patients. It is necessary to be prepared in the case these events happen, but an all-hazards emergency preparedness approach will also consider how to prepare and respond to events such as workplace violence that have a smaller impact, but tend to happen far more frequently."

CPI president Judith Schubert published an article in Hospital News discussing how workplace violence prevention efforts [PDF] in hospitals should be included as part of an organization’s emergency preparedness plans. Scroll to page 24 to view the article.
