Ten Tips for Crisis Prevention
A crisis can be defined as a moment in time when an individual in your charge loses rationality, and at times even physical, control over his own behavior. This can be very challenging and anxiety producing for those responsible for intervening. Due to the chaotic, unpredictable nature of a crisis, it is vital that staff stay calm and proceed with a plan.
Crisis Response Team
When a person begins to escalate and lose control, chaos can result. A Crisis Response Team can assist in de-escalating the situation. The following tips will help you keep your team intervention organized and effective.
De-escalation Tips
Read the article titled Communication is the Key to Crisis De-escalation and learn about the five keys to empathic listening, as well as the five ways to remain in control of any situation.
Medical Restraints
Do you work in an acute mental health care setting or security services? Have you had to use medical restraints, such as rapid tranquilization for sedation, or mechanical restraints? Have you ever wondered if there is a safer, less intrusive alternative to manage disturbed or extremely violent behavior? You may be like many others who work with aggressive, violent, and dangerous clients. They have found successful alternatives to restrictive emergency medical protocols.
Physical Intervention Training
Physical intervention procedures are for use in conditions in which the safety of the acting-out individual or others is in imminent danger. Physical intervention training should stress positive de-escalation skills and strategies as the most important methods of intervention, with physical intervention used only as a last resort.
Physical Restraint Training
Sometimes prospective customers ask, “Is this where I can get physical restraint training?” The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® program includes physical interventions and personal safety techniques, which are designed to maximize the safety of everyone involved in a crisis situation. However, the real intent of training is to learn a system of verbal and physical intervention techniques to allow staff to recognize and address escalating behavior at its earliest stages, before it escalates further.
Positional Asphyxia
Every staff member who is taught to perform physical restraints needs to be aware of the dangers of restraint-related positional asphyxia, a deadly condition that can occur when a person being restrained cannot breathe properly.
