As of December 1, 2011, districts must develop and implement a policy related to the use of restraint and seclusion. Under Chapter 42: Restraint and Seclusion in Schools, the following is required:

  • All staff shall receive training in evidence-based techniques shown to be effective in the prevention of physical restraint and seclusion, including evidence-based skills training related to positive behavior supports, safe physical escort, conflict prevention, de-escalation, and conflict management.

  • The minimum amount of training required for all staff shall be the number of hours recommended by the evidence-based training program selected by the school and ongoing training for all staff shall be provided as recommended by the evidence-based training program selected by the school.

  • Only trained, certified staff shall be permitted to utilize restraint and schools shall not utilize aversive interventions, mechanical restraints, or prone restraints at any time.

  • Schools shall develop an incident review strategy or debriefing strategy. The incident review or debriefing process shall address what, if any, subsequent actions need to be taken.

  • Schools must document each restraint or seclusion.

CPI can help you meet the new Wyoming requirements.

restraintclass175.jpgSince 1980, more than six million human service professionals—including tens of thousands of educators and special educators—have participated in CPI's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training and learned safe, nonharmful strategies for de-escalating challenging behavior. CPI’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training empowers educators with the skills and confidence to manage student’s acting-out behaviors at the earliest possible stage.

We invite you to download an alignment [PDF] that shows how CPI's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training principles align with the requirements of Wyoming’s Chapter 42: Seclusion and Restraints in School.

Our training is flexible and can be tailored to the unique needs of your school. With our “train-the-trainer” option, you’ll receive the best return on investment by certifying select staff to teach the program to other educators in your school or district on a continuing basis. In addition, CPI can help coordinate training for all the schools in your district.
