Teens and Dating Violence
Can you recognize the warning signs of dating abuse? February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Observed by parents and communities as well as students and schools, this month recognizes the need to "educate young people about relationships, teach healthy relationship skills and prevent the devastating cycle of abuse," according to TeenDVMonth.org.
West Virginia Schools Increasing Safety for Students and Staff
Everyone within a school system should feel safe and secure, from students and teachers to parents and administrators. To help achieve this goal, Policy 4374 goes into effect on July 1, 2012 for West Virginia's county boards of education. Updates provide school employees, students, and parents with a single policy that includes not only what's expected regarding student behavior, but also what's expected of school systems to create safe and supportive schools.
What Should Employers Do About Domestic Violence?
"An employee's car is vandalized in a school parking lot. A fire is deliberately set in a staff lounge and two people are injured. A manager is stabbed at an employee recognition event."
These incidents aren't being committed by random strangers. In each case, the perpetrator was the victim's partner or spouse. It's this dangerous intersection of personal life and the workplace that makes domestic abuse a valid concern for employers.
Is Bullying Just Another Rite of Passage?
The National Center for Education doesn't think so. Their statistics show that one in three children in America has been bullied in school during the past year. In another study by School Psychology International, almost 80% of high school students admitted to being bullied in school.
Making Positive Behavior Fun
From day one of the school year, students came to Central Elementary wanting to behave. What's the secret? Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)—and a great incentive to make kids want to do their best. Central Elementary is one of 13 schools in Rockingham County that has dedicated a special day of fun for students who use positive behaviors. Activities include Wii games, face painting, and bingo.
