July 2011 Legislative Activity Update
CPI continues to monitor national legislative activity regarding restraint and seclusion. Here is a summary of the most recent activity. All of the legislation included in this report has been proposed, but not passed. Read "July 2011 Legislative Activity Update."

Video of TASH Congressional Briefing on Restraint and Seclusion
As we reported earlier in the month, TASH, a disability advocacy organization in Washington, D.C., held a congressional briefing on national efforts to reduce the use of restraint and seclusion in school settings on June 28. A full video of the briefing is now available on the TASH website.

 

Questionnaire Helps Predict Aggressive Behavior
A study determined that the Brief Rating of Aggression by Children and Adolescents (BRACHA) tool, a questionnaire made up of 16 questions as well as demographic data, was effective in predicting aggression in children and teenagers. Read: "Questionnaire Helps Predict Aggressive Behavior."

 

New Addition to DCS Article Library: "Treating Psychotic Symptoms in Persons With Dementia"
Read the latest addition to the Dementia Care Specialists Article Library, "Treating Psychotic Symptoms in Persons With Dementia." The article discusses how a focus on behavior and communication can be used to lessen agitation in patients with dementia, rather than antipsychotic medications.

 

Our Schools Are Still Too Violent: NCES Releases School Crime and Safety Report
Read Tony Jace’s latest entry in the CPI Executive Blog, "Our Schools Are Still Too Violent:  NCES Releases School Crime and Safety Report," about the National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) recent report on school violence. The NCES is a division of the US Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences.

 

Video Explores Rise in Developmental Disorders Among Children
A video on KVOA.com, a website for a news channel in Tucson, AZ, looks into the causes of the increase in children with developmental disorders.
