Baby Seal Robot Provides Dementia Therapy
A six-pound baby seal robot is being used by about 40 medical agencies and hospitals throughout the country for dementia therapy, specifically for patients who can't speak, according to an article in the Chicago Tribune. The seal, who can cry, blink his eyes, and move parts of his body in response to sound and touch, encourages dementia patient interaction, and can inspire patients to recall memories about animal experiences. Senior-Friendly Stores
Retail stores are working to make the shopping experience more convenient for older shoppers, according to a recent article on the National Public Radio (NPR) website. Some stores are hanging magnifiers on shelves to aid shoppers in reading; installing carpeting rather than shiny, slippery flooring; and stocking products at easily reachable heights. School Bus Drivers Speak Out Against Violence
In an effort to decrease the number of violent incidents on their school busses, school bus drivers in Springfield, MA recently held a meeting to address the issue of school bus violence. The drivers, along with school administrators, instituted new bus policies such as the requirement that all students must have identification cards. Autism Checklist for Babies
A five-minute checklist could help diagnose babies with autism earlier than before, according to a recent article in The Washington Post. In a federally funded study of over 10,000 infants, the 24-question survey identified about half of the children who were later diagnosed with autism. Read: "Autism Checklist for Babies."
"Universal Design" Elements Help Young and Old
A video from The Wall Street Journal website discusses the concept of "universal design," which refers to home design features that make residences more accessible and useable for people, even as they age. CPI President Judith Schubert Publishes Opinion Letter in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Judith Schubert, CPI president, published an opinion letter in the May 13, 2011 issue of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The letter is a response to an article published in the May 8 issue of the Journal Sentinel, titled "Elder Abuses Go Unpunished," about seniors who've been neglected in care facilities.
