Individuals With Dementia More Likely to Wander

Florida House Bill 1073 Effective July 1, 2010
Florida H1073, which revises provisions relating to licensure and standards for facilities and programs for persons with developmental disabilities, will become effective as of July 1, 2010.
The bill requires training for child care personnel on care of children with developmental disabilities, as well as requirements for use of seclusion and restraint on public school students with disabilities. The state commissioner of education must also develop recommendations to include instruction relating to developmental disabilities into continuing education or in-service training requirements for personnel. Autism & Technology: There Are Apps For That!
Two recent articles discussed the use of technology to assist students with Autism. Students in Wausau, WI use an iPod Touch as assistive technology. Autism, which affects social interactions and communication skills, makes it difficult for those who are affected to express themselves. The iPod Touch has been an effective tool for these students because of its use of visual cues that can allow them to organize their day, according to the article.
New York City Council Administrative Code Amended
New York Administrative Code 9-201 has been amended to include incident reporting 60 days after the end of the fiscal year in regards to number of incidents of restraint and seclusion in juvenile justice facilities. Read: New York City Council Administrative Code Amended.
Georgia State Board of Education Proposes Rulemakings
The Georgia State Board of Education is proposing three new rules on topics which include seclusion and restraint, education facility design and construction standards, and high school graduation assessments.
Proposed rulemakings are rules that are being considered for adoption by the State Board of Education. Prior to adoption rules must be formally initiated and submitted for a public review period of at least 30 calendar days. Read the proposed rules.
Washington Youth Center Takes Different Approach
New Beginnings, a 60-bed facility in Maryland for youth charged with serious crimes that opened in June 2009, is the first to base its programs on those used for decades in Missouri, which has the lowest rate of juvenile repeat offenders in the country. The “Missouri model” focuses on placing youth into small settings where they can receive intense counseling, according to a recent article in USA Today.
