Your clients are important to you. You want to enhance quality of life and ensure people receive care appropriate to their abilities. As a therapist, you are in a prime position to maximize the function and well-being of people in your care.

Dementia Therapy: Achieving Positive Outcomes for the Person With Dementia is designed for occupational therapists (OTs), COTAs, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists (PTs), and PTAs who work with the geriatric dementia client. People receiving care appropriate to their abilities have fewer complications such as infections, stress, falls, hospital admissions, UTIs, skin breakdowns, depression/anxiety, and wandering.

Learn to shift from an impairment-based practice to an abilities-based practice by:

  • Demonstrating an understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) and its impact on cognitive function.
  • Describing the stages of dementia and approaches to maximize function and emotional well-being.
  • Identifying care approaches that promote best abilities corresponding to the Allen Cognitive Level of the person with dementia.
  • Evaluating and treating cognitive dysfunction using the Cognitive Disabilities Model by Claudia Allen, the Theory of Retrogenesis, and Kitwoods' Person-Centered Care.
  • Examining ways to support care and treatment plans in order to maximize function and well-being of persons with dementia.
  • Exploring the treatment path formula.
  • Establishing a common language so that staff teams are more effective at driving positive outcomes.
  • Discussing keys for successful reimbursement.
  • Developing and properly documenting treatment goals and plans.
  • Creating and implementing a successful maintenance program.
