Hybrid Training Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Will my participants use the same workbook for Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid training that we currently use for traditional training?
A. In hybrid training, participants use a customized Hybrid Portfolio that links the web-based and classroom-based portions of training. Participants record and print "entries" during the web-based portion and insert them into the Hybrid Portfolio during the classroom session. Certified Instructors receive Hybrid Portfolios when they order participant "seats."
Q. If I choose Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid training, do I need to train all staff using this method?
A. No. Hybrid training may be appropriate for some staff, but the traditional classroom-based approach may be more appropriate for others.
Q. Can I use Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid training as a formal refresher?
A. Yes. You can use the hybrid delivery option for either an initial or a refresher training.
Q. How will I know who has completed the web-based portion of the training and how many seats I have remaining?
A. When participants come to the classroom session, they bring their printed web-based entries to verify that they have completed this portion of the course. Information about the number of seats you have remaining will be available online. You will also be able to check participant status online at any time. We recommend that, for your own records, you track your seats as you issue them.
Q. How long will it take my participants to complete the web-based portion?
A. Generally, an average participant can expect the web-based portion to take approximately two to three hours. Because this is self-paced learning, some may spend less time and some may choose to spend more time.
Q. How long will the classroom instruction take?
A. Plan on approximately four to six hours depending on which units you teach and how much time you need for practice. A refresher course may take less classroom time.
Q. Can participants come to the classroom session without completing the web-based component?
A. No. Participants need to present their printed web-based entries when they attend the classroom session to verify that they have completed that portion of the course. If staff have not completed the web-based portion, you will need to reschedule them for a later class.
Q. How will I let my participants know where to access the web-based portion?
A. After you purchase seats for your participants, CPI will email you an access link that you will forward to your participants. To help you craft your email to participants, we'll email a sample template and include it in your Hybrid Classroom Instructor Guide. It will also be available for you to download.
Q. When are CPI's Personal Safety TechniquesSM and Nonviolent Physical Crisis InterventionSM introduced or reviewed?
A. During the web-based instruction, there is general information about physically acting-out behavior and the risks of restraints, but no physical techniques are taught. CPI's Personal Safety TechniquesSM and Nonviolent Physical Crisis InterventionSM are taught and practiced during the classroom session.
Q. Can I team teach the classroom portion with another Certified Instructor?
A. Yes. However, only authorized Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certified Instructors who have completed the Hybrid Instructor Training receive credit for additional training hours for the time spent assisting staff during the web-based portion of course.
Q. Will my participants receive Blue Cards™?
A. Yes. The documentation process for hybrid training is the same as it is for the traditional training method. Once CPI receives documentation of your training, Blue Cards™ (completion cards) will be sent to you.
Q. What are the technical requirements?
A. Technical requirements include:
- Intel® Pentium® III w/450 MHz or faster processor (or equivalent)
- 128 MB RAM
- Flash 10 plugin and JavaScript enabled
- Microsoft® Windows XP® (or newer), or Mac OSX v.10.4 (or higher)
- Internet Explorer 7.0 (or higher) or Firefox 3.0 (or higher) or equivalent Internet browser
- Audio capabilities
- Printer access
Q. Is CPI's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid training easier to teach?
A. The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid training option may be easier for some to teach because there is less face-to-face classroom instruction. However, the classroom portion of the hybrid training option differs significantly from a standard Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® program because participants come to the classroom portion of the training with a much greater understanding of the course content. As the Certified Instructor, you must prepare for both the web-based and classroom-based portions of the course.
Q. Do I need special training to teach the hybrid training?
A. CPI has developed a course that Certified Instructors must complete before gaining authorization to teach CPI's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid training. Two formats are available:
- The Instructor Basics course is a web-based, self-study program that provides general information about the hybrid training and highlights your roles and responsibilities for facilitating both parts of the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid training at your organization.
- The Instructor Seminar is a six-hour, face-to-face class facilitated by a CPI Global Professional Instructor that expands on the information in the Instructor Basics course. The intent is to provide you with a thorough understanding of how implementation and delivery of the hybrid training differ from other Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® trainings you have facilitated. You will learn how to introduce the hybrid option within your organization, maximize the relevance and impact of training, and identify the unique facilitation skills needed for the classroom portion of the course.
Q. Do participants have to take the web-based portion all at once, or can they save their work and come back to it at a later time?
A. The web-based portion of hybrid training allows participants to save their work at the end of each unit and return using the same or any other computer. This allows participants the flexibility to take the web-based portion of training at their own pace and convenience.
Q. As a Certified Instructor, do I receive credit for the hours of training my participants spend on the web-based portion?
A. To effectively teach the hybrid course, you need to support staff during the web-based portion of training, as well as prepare for the classroom-based training. To account for the training time that you and your participants spend on the web-based portion, authorized Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid Certified Instructors will receive double training hour credit based on the classroom-based portion of the program. For example, if you teach the classroom-based portion of the hybrid training in four hours, you will be credited with a total of eight training hours for the web-based and the classroom portions combined.
Q. Can a participant come to the classroom-based portion without completing the web-based portion?
A. The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® hybrid training design requires that each participant fully complete the web-based portion of training before attending the classroom-based portion. You are responsible to allow entry to the classroom session only to learners who have successfully completed the web-based portion.
Q. Can I order the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Hybrid Portfolios the same way I order workbooks?
A. The ordering process is slightly different. You will purchase the number of seats you need for your participants to access the web-based portion of the course. Upon purchase, you will receive an email with a unique participant access link (which you will send to participants), and CPI will ship the same number of Hybrid Portfolios. Once the allocated participant seats have been used, the unique web link will no longer be active. For example, if you order 100 seats, you will receive an email with one participant link that can be accessed by 100 participants. You will also receive 100 Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Hybrid Portfolios.
Q. Can participants forward their access links to someone else?
A. Access links are intended to be used only by the participants you intend to train. You will need to ensure that these links are secure and are not distributed to others, as each use of the access link will subtract from the total number of seats you ordered.
Q. Whom should participants call if they have technical problems with the program?
A. The web-based portion of training is designed to run well with the most commonly used web browsers and settings. Should technical issues surface, participants should first contact their organization's IT department to ensure that the most recent version of Flash is installed and that JavaScript is enabled. If technical requirements have been met but problems are not resolved, call Instructor Services at 877.877.5390.
