School Faculty Learn How to Handle Problem Behavior

Shout-out to Heidi Lauzon! As a Senior Level Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certified Instructor and a behavior consultant for the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District (GOISD) in Bergland, MI, Heidi trains staff at seven schools in positive strategies for preventing and handling challenging student behavior.
Part of her approach to helping staff reduce behaviors is making sure that they have the opportunity to regularly practice the skills they learn in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training.

To achieve this, Heidi has appointed a CPI Team Leader at each school, and together they coordinate monthly informal 15- to 30-minute practice sessions to help their coworkers stay skilled in best-practice techniques for handling situations when students get disruptive, angry, upset, or lose control of their behavior.
One highlight of the GOISD staff's routine is that before practicing physical skills like how to block and move away from strikes and grabs, they make great use of the warm-up stretch time by reviewing verbal intervention techniques and the CPI Crisis Development Model℠, a tool that defines escalating situations in terms of four distinct behavior levels—and gives staff a framework for choosing the most appropriate intervention to help an agitated student calm down.
“Refreshers are necessary to maintain the integrity of your team's approach and response,” Heidi reminds her Team Leaders.
Staff also participate in regular refreshers that are more formal. Trained in advanced techniques that she’s learned through the CPI Instructor Excellence Renewal Process, Heidi shares strategies for supporting students on the autism spectrum, and also enables staff to review their skills through blended learning.
