Shaping Memory Care Spaces to Empower Individual Abilities EFA 2019

Memory care spaces may require unique design thinking and special considerations, but they’re crucial to person-centered care, and to achieving a dementia capable society. That’s why Dementia Care Specialists is honored and excited to be a leading participant at this year’s Environments for Aging Expo & Conference.

A special pre-conference workshop, Designing Dementia Capable Environments, will be led by Dementia Care Specialists’s senior consultant, Sharon Host. This transformative workshop is aimed at architects, designers, developers, owners and executive directors. Although this may be a broad audience, participation from all is essential because exceptional memory care design requires a team approach where everyone is working together.

According to Host, “Space design has a domino effect on level of care. When design is done right, spaces can empower persons with dementia. However, if design is created in a vacuum, the result is a pretty building that’s not functional or that actually inhibits functionality.”

Workshop activities include breaking down perceptions about persons with dementia, analyzing the stages of dementia and what design changes need to occur to support residents who are at different levels of cognition, and designing a customized space based on a specific elder profile.

This workshop is a must for those who need to understand how a person with dementia and their environment can blend together. Daily life and routines shouldn’t have to change, and now you can lead the way toward positive outcomes for all.
