Bring an unopened can or bottle of soda to training. Complete one of the following options before beginning the lecture on Precipitating Factors.
Have a volunteer come to the front of the class and hold the can of soda. Explain to the class and the volunteer that you will share the story of an individual who has a lot going on in her life. Ask the volunteer to shake the soda every time he thinks that the person in the story would become more upset or stressed. You can also ask the class to encourage the "shaker" to shake the soda when they believe it's necessary. Tell your story. When your story reaches the point at which the individual would most likely act out, turn to the volunteer and ask him to open the soda. (But stop him before he actually opens it!)
Hand the soda to the person in the front corner seat. Explain to the class that you will share a story of an individual who has a lot going on. Ask the participant with the soda to shake the can or bottle when she hears a detail that would cause the individual to become more upset or stressed. Once she shakes the can, she should pass it to the person sitting next her. Have participants follow this process until you reach the climax of the story. Then ask whoever is holding the can to open it. (But stop the participant before he actually opens it!)
Do everything the same as option 2, but instead of telling the story yourself, have the participants create the details. Simply set the stage with an individual in a situation, and let the participants add details as they pass the can.
