When we focus on feelings, people appreciate our empathy. And if we react with compassion when they’re feeling anxious, scared, or uncomfortable, their behavior is less likely to escalate.
Here are a few ways you can show your empathy to the people in your care:
- Reduce distractions. If someone is upset, move with her to a quiet area.
- Listen. Let the person talk. Focus on the feelings behind her words.
- Use restatement. Repeating in your own words what you think the person is saying will give her a chance to clarify her meaning, and it will allow you to understand the heart of the matter.
Taking the time to understand the points of view of others can help you build a better rapport with them. And when you have strong, positive relationships, you’ll be better able to ensure Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security
