Design a T-Shirt and Raise Awareness About Ovarian Cancer

Laura David, one of my closest friends, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 23. I watched her fight her cancer head on, while maintaining a smile throughout her struggle with this devastating disease. We volunteered together for many years at the annual Laura’s Smile Mile event. Laura passed away shortly after her thirtieth birthday in 2011, but we continue to remember her smile and to hold this event in her memory and to raise awareness about ovarian cancer.

Laura’s Smile Mile is set for its ninth annual event on Saturday June 6, 2015 on Milwaukee's lakefront at Veterans' Park. The event is a 5K run/2-mile walk, along with a short run for children called the Giggle Gallop. It’s sponsored by Laura’s Smile Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports ovarian cancer education and awareness. Last year, the foundation was able to donate $15,000 to support both ovarian cancer research going on at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the awareness-raising efforts of the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance (WOCA). We’re hoping that someday an early detection method and a cure will be found for this disease.

This year, for the first time, the Laura's Smile Foundation is offering a contest for people to design the T-shirt for June’s event. This is a great opportunity for graphic design students and aspiring creative artists to showcase their skills and add credentials to their resumes and portfolios. The T-shirt must include the Laura’s Smile Mile® logo and the date of the event. Optional items to include are a teal ribbon, the phrase “Ovarian Cancer Awareness” and “5K Run/2-Mile Walk.” Examples of past T-shirt designs are available on the contest rules page for reference. The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2015. The top three finalists will be posted on the Laura's Smile Facebook page.

I look forward to seeing the creative talent of our local Milwaukee community, and I hope to see you at the event!
