Meeting WorkSafeBC’s Workplace Bullying and Harassment Policies

Tasked with implementing British Columbia's Workers' Compensation Act (WCA), WorkSafeBC has approved three new Occupational Health and Safety Workplace Bullying and Harassment Policies.

 

About the Policies

Set to take effect on November 1, 2013, the policies address how employers, employees, and supervisors in British Columbia prevent and minimize workplace bullying and harassment. The policies are intended to clarify 2012’s WCA and are designed to help employers develop policies and procedures to facilitate safe and respectful workplace cultures for all employees.

WorkSafeBC’s guidelines for employers include:
  • Develop a policy stating that workplace bullying and harassment is not acceptable or tolerated.
  • Implement a process for workers to report incidents of workplace bullying and harassment.
  • Implement a process for dealing with reports of workplace bullying and harassment.
  • Train supervisors and workers on recognizing, responding to, and reporting incidents of bullying and harassment.

The new policies are designed to address the difficulty that exists with defining workplace violence and bullying. Governments, legislators, employers, unions, and individuals all define, interpret, and view workplace bullying differently. British Columbia’s new policies clarify for BC employers what the province expects from its employers, employees, and supervisors.

 

Training and Resources to Help You Address Workplace Bullying

CPI provides training and resources to help organizations develop staff on the issue of workplace bullying and harassment. We offer the following resources and programs for addressing workplace bullying:
  • Workplace Bullying Prevention and Response Policies and Procedures Template—an editable document that you can customize with your organisation's logo and policies. It offers guidance and resources and suggests expectations, practices, and protocols to follow to prevent workplace bullying. This template is available to any organization aiming to prevent and respond to issues of workplace bullying.
  • Workplace Bullying: Matters at Work—a three- to four-hour seminar offered by CPI to organizations aiming to prevent and respond to issues of workplace bullying.
  • Workplace Bullying Topic Module—a two-hour module that can be delivered by anyone in your organization who is a Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certified Instructor, a Dementia Capable Care Certified Instructor, or a Prepare Training® Certified Instructor. Tailoring Training to Your Organisation’s Needs

Becoming certified to teach one or more of our training programs to other staff in your organization enables you to share the techniques presented in the Workplace Bullying Topic Module with staff.

If you work in an environment with a duty to care such as a school, a community home, or a hospital, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training will equip you and your staff with practical strategies for safely managing disruptive behaviour while balancing the responsibilities of care.

If you work in a business environment where there is no duty to care such as retail, a manufacturing organization, or a library or another public building, Prepare Training® will equip you and your staff with skills for effectively responding to challenging customer and coworker behaviour.

If you work with individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia, Dementia Capable Care training will give you and your staff the knowledge, skills, and resources to improve function, safety, and quality of life for individuals with dementia.

All three training programs can be tailored to the unique needs of your organisation. With our train-the-trainer option, select staff can be certified to teach any of our programs, as well as the Workplace Bullying Topic Module, to other staff on a continuing basis.
