Want to add “CPI Certified Autism Specialist in Education” to your professional title? Want to enhance your skill set without having to re-arrange your schedule or attend an off-site CPI training course? These vital career tools and training are now readily available thanks to CPI’s latest online offering, Focus on Autism.

Focus on Autism is a CPI eLearning course that will help Certified Instructors incorporate autism-specific examples, key points, and activities into their ongoing Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training process. This means that you don’t have to take a 3-day, in-person, advanced level course with CPI or wait until your renewal is due to glean this valuable information. And you’ll get extended access to the online course materials well beyond the duration of a traditional training session!

CPI associate training director and resource specialist Pam Sikorski is incredibly excited about this new offering. “You don’t have the hassle or expense of travel – it’s accessible to you from the comfort of your own home and workplace for an extended period of time so you can review it repeatedly.  Much more cost effective and time efficient!”

The online course was created by CPI and our partners at the Institute for Behavioral Training (IBT)*. It includes such resources as downloadable instructor notes and an activity appendix. The CPI-created modules provide a fundamental understanding of autism, and explore how you can tailor each unit of the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training curriculum toward staff who work with individuals with autism. The IBT-created modules further discuss using evidence-based practices to support individuals on the spectrum.

Topics covered in the course include:
  • Collaboration with other professionals and families
  • Assessments, Data Collection, and Behavior Plans
  • Discrete Trial Training
  • Reinforcement Strategies
  • Augmentative communication
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Skill Building & Environmental Approaches
  • Updated autism research and resources
  • Topics around self-injurious behavior
  • Tools to adapt communication skills for nonverbal individuals
  • Information about legal considerations when caring for individuals with autism

The online course is broken up into modules that can take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours in duration, and your enrollment provides you with 180 days to complete the course. You’ll also receive 120 days of access to additional learning modules on the IBT website to deepen your knowledge base. Once you pass a short final exam at the end of the course with a score of 80% or better, you’ll receive your certification as an autism specialist in education, and you’ll be equipped to immediately enhance the training you provide to your staff.

As a new school year gets underway, it’s critical to consider how the staff of schools, medical facilities, and professional development agencies that support individuals on the autism spectrum can strengthen their approach. Working in these roles as so many of our Certified Instructors do, you may find that time constraints have prevented you from getting more in-depth training, particularly when it comes to CPI’s Focus on Autism training modules. That’s why enrollment and training are now more flexible than they have ever been, and we are excited to make this resource available to you!
