Dementia Care Specialists (DCS) at Crisis Prevention Institute provides training that focuses person-centered care to help people living with dementia enjoy the high quality of life they deserve.
A critical step to ensuring your care is both person-centered and stage-specific is designing a dementia friendly care environment. But what exactly does that mean? A dementia friendly and dementia capable environment is one that allows residents to thrive, with spaces that are supportive and functional for individuals living with all stages of dementia. So, where do you start?
The DCS team is taking their consulting services to the Environments for Aging (EFA) Conference, as they host a pre-conference workshop for attendees looking to incorporate key design principles into structural designs and soft furnishings that support the remaining abilities of persons in all stages of dementia. DCS’ Workshop—Designing Dementia Capable Environments—will help you gain the insight needed to develop a state-of-the-art facility.
Workshop Overview
Presented by Sharon R. Host, OTR/L Senior Consultant and Global Professional Instructor for Dementia Care Specialists at Crisis Prevention Institute, the Designing Dementia Capable Environments workshop will offer attendees a two-fold approach to memory care design.
Part One: Stages of Dementia
The first half of the workshop will introduce you to the stages of dementia and common aging changes. This provides you with a better understanding of the population for which you are designing—ultimately enabling you to create an environment that maximizes the remaining abilities of persons living with dementia.
Part Two: Design Lab
The second half of the workshop takes the knowledge gained during part one and puts it into action. Each attendee will be given an elder profile to design for, utilizing principles that align with the SAGE Principles of Gerontological Environments.
