Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training is a behavior management system that teaches simple skills for assessing, managing, and responding to risk behavior at work. The focus is on verbal de-escalation, prevention, and early intervention. Safe physical intervention options are also taught, to be used only as a last resort.

This time-tested program gives you an effective framework for decision making and problem solving. It also equips you with the skills and confidence to champion a culture of Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security℠.

The CPI Crisis Development Model

Learn the four levels of crisis development, and corresponding staff responses for each behavior level.

Nonverbal Communication

Explore how your nonverbal communication can positively or negatively affect an individual’s behavior.

Paraverbal Communication

Examine how the way you say what you say can influence how someone perceives your message.

Verbal Communication

Delve into verbal intervention and Empathic Listening approaches to de-escalate a situation and decelerate a person’s behavior.

Precipitating Factors, Rational Detachment, Integrated Experience 

Discover how antecedents can influence behaviors, and explore how your attitudes and actions can influence a person in crisis.

Staff Fear and Anxiety

Explore how to cope with fear and anxiety, and how to stimulate positive and productive responses during crisis situations.

Decision Making

Organize your thinking about the risks of different behaviors. Learn critical analysis and rational reasoning to make appropriate decisions about how to respond in a situation.

Physical Interventions — Disengagement Skills

Learn nonharmful skills for responding to risk behaviors such as strikes and grabs.

Physical Interventions — Holding Skills

Understand the risks of restraint use. Explore progressive team responses to physical risk behaviors, and essential methods for discontinuing restraint use as soon as possible.


Learn a key framework for debriefing, establishing Therapeutic Rapport, preventing future crises, and improving staff interventions.
