Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Foundation Course With Advanced Physical Skills
For most organizations, the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Foundation Course offers the optimal mix of concepts and skills to safely address many of the behaviors staff encounter. However, in organizations that support persons who are likely to demonstrate higher risk behaviors, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Foundation Course With Advanced Physical Skills provides effective tools to help staff manage these complex situations.

This five-day renewal option offers Certified Instructors additional skills in risk assessment and problem solving, along with facilitation strategies for teaching advanced physical interventions to staff. Instructors gain a deeper understanding of the Foundation Course principles and expand their approaches for minimizing the use and duration of physical intervention.

Who Should Attend
  • Current Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certified Instructors, especially those who have completed CPI’s Applied Physical TrainingSM. The content aligns with the recent Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® program enhancements.
  • CPI Certified Instructors who have experienced the enhanced content and whose staff need to manage higher risk or complex behaviors.

Program at a Glance

DAY 1
Participants experience Units 1–8 of the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Foundation Course, which has been integrated with additional considerations for advanced physical skills. Content includes prevention and deceleration strategies, decision making, and CPI’s disengagement skills for managing behavioral risk.

DAY 2
Participants engage in the static practice of CPI’s holding skills and learn to apply safe, biomechanical principles in a range of scenarios. The holding skills are person-centered, reasonable, and proportionate to the individual’s risk behavior and include responses that require staff to manage extreme physical risk behaviors. Considering the associated risks, participants continuously apply frameworks for decision making to reduce the level of restriction and/or to disengage from the hold.

DAY 3
On day three, the final components of the advanced content are completed. By mid-day, participants shift from learning content to developing their skills as a Certified Instructor and examine specific strategies of CPI Global Professional Instructors. These strategies are designed to maximize adult learning retention and improve transfer of concepts from the classroom to the workplace.

DAY 4
On day four, Certified Instructor candidates deepen their knowledge by applying the learning strategies acquired in day three and practicing their content delivery under the guidance and direction of the CPI Global Professional Instructors. During their “teach-backs,” candidates will also demonstrate their knowledge and presentation ability. Over the course of days four and five, candidates engage in Practicum Assignments, Teaching Physical Skills, and Physical Skills Confirmation.

DAY 5
The fifth day continues with Physical Skills Confirmation and a final written exam to ensure comprehension and competency. The program concludes with a deeper discussion about what it means to be a CPI Certified Instructor, roles and responsibilities, and strategies to assure that staff are able to provide Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecuritySM within their organization.

Leave Fully Equipped to Train
Instructors who successfully complete this course leave equipped to begin training Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Foundation Course with Advanced Physical Skills immediately. In addition to gaining membership to the CPI Certified Instructor Association, participants receive valuable support tools and training resources, including a comprehensive Instructor Guide that contains:
  • Prerequisites and requirement guidelines for teaching each advanced physical skill.
  • Additional considerations for using the higher-risk physical skills.
  • Expanded activities around the Risks of Restraints and the Opt-Out SequenceSM.
  • Added images and callouts of Classroom Models for the advanced physical skills.
  • Color-coded pathways and icons to differentiate advanced from foundational content.
  • Flexible delivery options that allow them to respond to learner needs by using an Instructor-centered or a learner-centered approach in class.
