Instructor Training

Get certified to train staff where you work!

Back to Nonviolent Crisis Intervention®

The CPI Instructor Certification Program

When you take our train-the-trainer program, first you’ll learn how to master prevention and intervention techniques. Then you’ll become certified to teach what you’ve learned to your colleagues.

It begins with the Foundation Course.

This is where you learn the keys to defusing difficult behavior.

In your first days of training, you’ll learn early intervention and deceleration strategies that work. By exploring the language of behavior, you’ll get skills to prevent situations from escalating at the earliest possible stage. You’ll get effective techniques to:

  • Identify behaviors that can lead to a crisis.
  • Assess risk, and choose which intervention to use and when.
  • Use verbal and nonverbal techniques to resolve a crisis before it can become violent.
  • Cope with fear and anxiety.
  • Use CPI’s disengagement skills to avoid injury if behavior becomes physical.

You’ll also learn nonharmful holding skills. These will help you manage physical behavior in the least restrictive, safest way possible. They’re to be used only as a last resort, and only if an individual becomes an immediate physical danger to self or others. The focus is on:
  • When it is and is not appropriate to physically intervene.
  • How to prevent the need to physically intervene.
  • Why—and how—to use team intervention strategies.
  • How to assess the physical and psychological well-being of everyone involved in a crisis.
  • How to maintain rapport with an acting-out individual.
  • How to properly document an incident.
  • Key steps for debriefing after a crisis—to prevent it from happening again.

Then you take it to the next level with Instructor Certification.

This is where you learn how to confidently teach the Foundation Course to staff in your organization.

You’ll discover how to:

  • Effectively teach adult learners.
  • Educate staff about the risks of using restraints.
  • Handle difficult questions and challenging participants.
  • Be proficient at teaching both prevention techniques and physical interventions.
  • Develop an ongoing Training Process.
  • Access our free follow-up services to customize and support your ongoing training.

You choose how you want to become a Certified Instructor.

You’ll love all the support.
