CPI’s Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index

Taking the first steps toward creating a safer workplace doesn’t have to be intimidating, overwhelming, or even time-consuming. There are simple steps you can take to help your organization reduce incidents of violence and become safer for your staff, patients, and their families.

Introducing the first-of-its-kind Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index.

Simple Steps Toward a Safer Workplace

1. Assess Your Workplace Violence Training and Preparedness

Getting your score with CPI’s groundbreaking Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index is the first step to understanding your teams’ safety and preparedness to respond to crises in the workplace. Our 10-question survey will help you evaluate the effectiveness of your health system’s current workplace violence prevention training and discover critical data to help you advocate for de-escalation training in your health system.

2. Compare Your Score to the Industry Average

Understanding how your organization compares relative to the industry helps to show the bigger picture; most organizations have little safeguarding them against the risks associated with unsafe work environments. And while many health care professionals feel safe at work, most don’t feel prepared to resolve a crisis, leaving them and their organization incredibly vulnerable.

3. Gain Recommendations from CPI

CPI is your trusted partner as you work toward a culture of safety across your health system. Our team will review your Index Score with you and provide recommendations to help you design an effective workplace violence prevention program customized to the needs of your health system. We’ll ensure the right de-escalation skills are consistently rolled out to your entire staff, across all departments.

Developing the Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index

Across health care systems, high patient volumes, increased staff turnover, and limited resources are continuing to collide, resulting in significant increases in workplace violence. In 2022 alone, nearly half of nurses reported an increase in workplace violence; an increase of 119% from March 2021 (source: NNU).

There has never been a greater need to not only prevent violence in health care, but to also provide health systems with the skills needed to de-escalate incidents when they do occur; building a true culture of safety.

As an organization dedicated to creating a safe environment for health care professionals, CPI understands the need to support the industry with meaningful insights and recommendations for improving safety. Our industry leading de-escalation training has helped health care systems worldwide gain the skills needed to identify, prevent, and de-escalate violence and crises in the workplace, but we knew there was even more we could do to help.

In 2022, we collected data from over 3,000 health care professionals to develop the first-of-its-kind Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index, enabling health care professionals to assess their training and preparedness relative to the rest of the industry.

Many organizations attribute limited time and resources—and a lack of data supporting the need for de-escalation training—as to why they do not implement long-term workplace violence prevention strategies. The Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index not only provides the data needed to advocate for additional de-escalation training but allows CPI to provide customized recommendations to help health systems achieve their goal of creating a safer workplace.

Understanding Your Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index Score

When you take the Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index Survey, questions are grouped into two categories.

  1. Safe Workplace Index (SWI): summarizes respondents’ feelings around the safety of their workplace.
  2. Workplace Preparedness Index (WPI): summarizes respondents’ feelings around their workplace’s preparedness to resolve conflict.

The final Workplace Violence Prevention Training Index Score represents the average of the SWI and WPI scores and places you in one of four categories: Leaders, Above Average, Below Average, and Laggards. Each category comes with its own set of recommendations to help you achieve your workplace safety goals.
