A Culture of Safety Belongs to Everyone

Violence prevention in health care requires a culture of safety, where every staff member plays a key role in creating a safe work environment. CPI created this webinar in response to findings shared by the Joint Commission, specifically Sentinel Event Alert, Issue 45: Preventing Violence in the Health Care Setting. Though the Alert was originally published in June of 2010, the issue of workplace violence has not abated, and an addendum was issued this year. The Joint Commission states: “Health care institutions today are confronting steadily increasing rates of crime, including violent crimes such as assault, rape and homicide. As criminal activity spills over from the streets onto the campuses and through the doors, providing for the safety and security of all patients, visitors and staff within the walls of a health care institution, as well as on the grounds, requires increasing vigilant attention and action by safety and security personnel as well as all health care staff and providers.”
That’s where CPI training comes in. This online session explores not only the incidence of assaultive behavior in health care facilities but the Precipitating Factors, including daily occurrences like verbal aggression, that are the roots of workplace violence. The Joint Commission and OSHA have made it clear that these factors are not isolated to one area of a health care facility—from leadership policy development to deficiencies within the physical environment, every layer of staff has a hand in the problem and is equally capable of owning the solution.
We want to challenge you to reconsider how your workplace defines “violence,” and learn how you can actively take steps to prevent it. A culture of safety belongs to each of us, and the foundation of effective crisis prevention is training.
