Stop me if you’ve heard this one. Two licensed professionals are playing a game of hide-and-seek. One spots the other hiding behind a tree says, “I CEU.”

I love that joke. Welcome to another episode of the CEUniverse. Today I’ll discuss the opportunity I had recently to attend a Dementia Capable Care training and what it made me consider in terms of continuing education as a whole.

No matter what field you work in, your role as a licensed professional carries importance and responsibility. You likely pursue continuing education for professional development and growth. Still, sometimes it’s easy to feel detached on a daily basis. Meetings, care provision, and paperwork can mount, creating a barrier to development that can be easy to overlook.

I recently felt a need to feed my own development, and to make a shift. So I attended a Dementia Capable Care training program, as we CPI employees have the opportunity to attend our training courses so we can learn firsthand what our customers’ jobs are like and how we can help them address their daily issues and grow in their professions.

The Instructor immediately set a fabulous tone for the training environment. Her passion had an infectious impact on me and my fellow adult learners. Attendees came to training with a willingness to embrace new experience and knowledge. Each learner shared a genuine desire for personal growth and professional development.

From the first moment of the course, our Instructor gave us an immeasurable amount of information and insight. Each unit of training allowed for a paradigm shift in thought and practice in terms of how to think about and support people who have Alzheimer’s and dementia. Throughout the lectures, activities, and role-plays, attendees engaged each other with honesty and vulnerability. This intangible variable spurred amazing conversation and problem solving, fostering individual and group reflection and growth that I found magical.

The lessons we learned are applicable across all levels of life. The sacred space of our training room, which nurtured new action and thought, reminded me of exactly what a continuing education experience was meant to be. We all left with a fresh sense of wisdom and enthusiasm.

I close with the hope that you as a licensed professional and an adult learner pursue a similar paradigm shift in the education you seek, and that you walk away from continuing education training with results like mine. And as always, feel free to reach out with any questions. CEU later!
