A report by the Independent Commission on Mental Health and Policing has found that “discriminatory attitudes, failures in systems, misjudgments or errors by individuals, limited resources, and poor co-ordination with other services” have played a role in the deaths and injuries of mentally ill people who have been in the custody of or had contact with the Metropolitan police.
The Metropolitan police received 61,258 calls related to mental illness in 2012—over 20,000 more calls than those connected with robbery. With situations involving vulnerable people putting pressure on police, the families of people with mental illness are calling for more training for both police officers and NHS staff.
