From MAPA® to CPI Verbal Intervention & CPI Safety Intervention

Our MAPA® training was established in 1988 and has been one of Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)’s most popular programmes. Over the years, we updated the training curriculum to align with RRN standards. In 2021, we restructured MAPA® into two programmes: Verbal Intervention™ and Safety Intervention™.

CPI Programme Evolution

As the worldwide leader in de-escalation training, CPI is committed to continually improving training content to match the needs of the people being served. Since the establishment of MAPA® in 1988, we have continued to update and improve our core to better align with RRN standards.

In 2021, we took the term MAPA® which was used to describe the full curriculum and divided it into two distinct programmes: CPI Verbal Intervention enables you to teach all the CPI preventative approaches and CPI Safety Intervention enables you to teach all the CPI preventative interventions plus the disengagements and/or holding skills. Dividing the MAPA® curriculum into these two distinct programmes gave us a clearer focus on prevention and addresses concerns that the MAPA® programme was only about ‘restraint’.

This is a graphic showing the evolution of the MAPA training programme over the years, from MAPA to Safety Intervention training programme.

Many of our customers have used the term MAPA® within their organisations for many years and we know that organisations have this term built into job titles and organisational policies.  Since the move to CPI Safety Intervention in 2021, we have had a resounding positive response from customers, especially liking how we have separated CPI Verbal Intervention from the safety interventions found in the full course.

This has enabled customers to be able to deliver the theory and de-escalation modules to staff who do not require any of the physical interventions due to their job roles. We recommend that you plan to update your policies as well as anywhere else you have referenced the term MAPA® to read either: Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI®), or specifically naming the programme you deliver: e.g. CPI Safety Intervention.

CPI is committed to the reduction of restraint and seclusion in all organisations worldwide and therefore we continue to invest in research as well as programme development that will allow staff to feel both safe and secure in their roles while providing the best care and welfare to those that they support. CPI recognises that at times, due to a person’s safety needs and/or within their best interests, there is a requirement to intervene physically and yet we would always advocate for all physical interventions to be robustly risk assessed as well as delivered in the most reasonable, safe and proportionate way.

Our core values of Care, Welfare, Safety and SecuritySM have remained the same throughout the development of our programmes with people and relationships being at the heart of what we do.

As the Crisis Prevention Institute, we are committed to delivering world class, evidence-based training that equips staff members with the right knowledge and skills required to keep themselves and the people they work with safe.

Part of this commitment to our customers and the industries they serve is to continue to develop our programmes in line with current research and best practices all over the world.
