Scotland County School System – North Carolina, US

The Impact of CPI Training

  • Reduced misconduct
  • Reduced fights and assaults
  • Improved staff understanding
  • Improved student success

Situation

The Scotland County School System of North Carolina was looking to improve their Behavior Support for Exceptional Children (BSEC) program. The program supports students with learning difficulties in developing skills in problem solving, social interaction, conflict resolution, and more. But teachers and staff struggled with how to best support the students when challenges arose.

Chris W., a behavioral specialist, was hired to help improve the BSEC program and develop comprehensive training for teachers and staff. To do this, Chris developed a three-tiered approach called Building Bridges.

Solution

Chris supported the Scotland County School System as they incorporated CPI’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training with the Positive Behavior Support (PBS) program and Second Step program already in place at the schools. Incorporating CPI training helped fill in the gaps left by the other two programs. And it also gave staff and teachers a common language and training to safely de-escalate and prevent challenging situations.

Results

The three-tiered approach (CPI Training, PBS, and Second Step) helped teachers better care for the needs of students and support their academic success. By incorporating these trainings each year Chris believes, “students and teachers are given a much more concrete foundation to follow. Positive interaction gives children and adults a feeling that they are worthy. Building Bridges gives children the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to express themselves and improve their outcomes.”

“These three components of Building Bridges (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention®, PBS, and Second Step) have helped a great deal this past year in dealing with bullies, out-of-school suspensions, and other problems that we tend to see in schools and in the community.”
