PJ Care: Standardising Safe Care and Building Staff Confidence

PJ Care partnered with CPI to create a tailored training solution adapted to their needs with Clinical Holding™ and Essential Care & Support™, improving staff practice and establishing a culture of safety and compassion.

Impact of CPI Training

  • Safer, standardised practice: Staff now follow clear, consistent approaches to essential care, reducing risk and increasing safety.
  • Boosted staff confidence: Clinical teams feel more assured and capable when supporting residents during sensitive care situations.
  • Culture change in care delivery: New policies, risk assessments and care plans embed CPI techniques into everyday practice, improving governance and consistency.
"Staff now feel like they’ve got a standardised way of supporting residents during essential care. They’re more confident and more effective when approaching these situations."

Situation

PJ Care is a specialist provider of care for adults with complex neurological conditions, operating across Milton Keynes and Peterborough. With over 500 staff, including 300+ clinicians, carers, nurses and therapists, PJ Care needed a training solution that could scale across two regions.

Previous providers offered programmes that were either too generic or too complex. PJ Care needed a bespoke, tailored solution that reflected the realities of their service users, many of whom require gentle support during essential care, rather than high-level restraint techniques.

Implementation

After consultation with CPI, PJ Care adopted a hybrid programme of Clinical Holding™ and Essential Care & Support™, delivered across three days (two days of training plus a one-day consultation tailored to their context).

Seven staff became Certified Instructors (CIs), enabling internal delivery across sites. Training has since rolled out to 190 clinical staff, with more scheduled for completion. Those trained include carers, nurses, therapists, physiotherapists and neuropsychologists.

New policies and procedures, co-designed with CPI, have been embedded into practice. Risk assessments and care planning systems were updated to include prescribed skills, ensuring governance oversight and safety.

“The simplicity of the programme means it’s easy to digest, implement and embed. Previous providers made things too complex. With CPI, we can now see the practice follow through onto the floor.”

Outcomes

PJ Care is already seeing stronger confidence among staff and a significant cultural shift towards standardisation and safety, an impressive progression even at this early stage of the rollout.

Key changes include:

  • Updated policies and care plans integrating CPI skills.
  • Staff empowered to safely support residents during essential care.
  • Greater confidence among new trainers to deliver, assess and coach.
  • Stronger governance and measurement tools in place, including hazard and incident reporting forms.

“This has been a monumental shift. We’ve never worked in quite this way before, and now our teams feel safer, more confident and more consistent.”

Future Perspectives

With 130+ staff still to be trained, PJ Care is focused on full implementation across both regions. Plans include:

  • Expanding the CI team with four additional instructors.
  • Introducing on-unit competency checks and coaching to reinforce skills.
  • Using governance data to track incidents and measure long-term impact.
  • Scaling training to support new units and services as PJ Care grows.

“Now we’ve got the quality of provision, it’s about delivering it to everybody and ensuring quality assurance. Long term this will give us the confidence to grow while keeping staff and residents safe.”
