Tips for Managing Stressful Interactions at the Polls

October 26, 2020
Two pairs of hands clasped together.

In-person voting, holiday shopping, and tightening restrictions on gatherings are adding stress and anxiety to what has already been a stressful year. This can be daunting—especially if you don’t know where to start when thrust into a challenging situation. Here are a few things you can do to keep calm and de-escalate someone who is becoming increasingly distressed:

  1. Avoid judgement.
  2. Don’t take it personally.
  3. Control your reactions.
  4. Be prepared if you have to engage.

These tips can help de-escalate tense conversations and keep your environment calm. We hope you can put them to use throughout the rest of this year and beyond.
