Topics Of Expertise

Recognising, understanding, and addressing trauma is essential in creating a truly therapeutic environment. How individuals are supported during moments of distress can profoundly impact their well-being and may lead to additional trauma for everyone involved.

Trauma-informed care focuses on safety, trust, empowerment and collaboration, ensuring that patients feel supported in their mental health journey while also reducing the potential negative impact on staff.

Explore the relationship between person-centred support and the effective management of risk. Is there a tension between empowering individuals as experts in their own care and ensuring the safety of them and other vulnerable people? This topic guides professionals in navigating the ethical and professional considerations of managing risk within a person-centred approach.

Reducing restrictive practices, including unnecessary physical restraint, is a key objective for all providers committed to high-quality care. This topic introduces an evidence-based model for restraint reduction, featuring practical applications of Huckshorn’s six core strategies. By sharing best practices in care, it guides providers in targeting resources to create a positive impact on care delivery.

Tim is an experienced Learning Disability Nurse with a career spanning over two decades in health and social care. He began his journey in 1996, qualifying in 2002 and gaining valuable experience in secure NHS settings, where he was introduced to the MAPA® (now Safety Intervention™) approach.

In 2005, Tim earned a first-class honours degree as a Specialist Community Practitioner and transitioned to training staff in learning disabilities, mental health and older people’s care. He became a full-time trainer with CPI in 2012, sharing his expertise across the UK and internationally, including Qatar and Malta.

Tim has played a key role in CPI’s involvement with the Restraint Reduction Network conferences, delivering many workshops. Now a manager within CPI’s training delivery team, Tim continues to drive forward best practices in the field, such as quality assuring training and leading on the introduction of the recent Safety Pod course.

" Tim’s session was both insightful and practical, he offered clear strategies to enhance Trauma-Informed Care for our service users. I left feeling inspired and ready to implement some of his key tips with my team next week!"
