CPI Training at NHS Foundation Trusts

The pandemic increased the need for CPI training across the UK. For the NHS Foundation Trusts in the Northwest of England the training has been integrated really successfully into paediatric settings.

Challenge

Over the past few years, specialist mental health services for children and young people have been increasingly difficult to access.

In 2022, Sky News reported that almost 40% of young people were waiting too long for treatment.

In 2020, almost 31,000 young people were referred to CAMHS in England; 38% of those had to wait longer than the 18-week NHS target to get their first assessment.

Across NHS Foundation Trusts there has been a significant increase in admissions to general hospital paediatric wards for adolescences with eating disorders during and post pandemic.

Some of these patients would require feeding via a nasogastric (NG) tube and staff having to administer this treatment hadn’t undergone appropriate holding skills training to confidently do so.

This had a real impact on staff confidence and morale as well as increasing the level of distress for the patient.

The patients undergoing this treatment were picking up on staff uncertainty and it was also distressing for other patients on the ward as well as those who visit them.

Process

CPI began combatting this issue with training at South East NHS Foundation Trust and has since rolled out the same training (a combination of Safety Intervention™  and across various NHS trusts across England.

In the North West, CPI has trained 18 members of staff since October 2022 in Safety Intervention™ and the award-winning Clinical Holding programme for children and young people.

Those 18 trainers, CPI Certified Instructors, are based across the following trusts in the North West and are able to train other staff within their own trusts as well as others in the region:

  • Mid Cheshire NHS FT
  • Southport & Ormskirk NHS FT
  • Countess of Chester FT
  • Warrington & Halton FT
  • Northern Care Alliance FT
  • Morecambe Bay NHS FT
  • St Helens & Knowsley NHS FT
  • Tameside & Glossop NHS FT
  • Northern Care Alliance
  • Wirral University NHS FT
  • Wirral NHS FT

Solution & Results

"In 2022 the Northwest CYP Transformation Programme Team, with Specialised Commissioning, NHSE, worked closely with our colleagues across the Northwest and CPI to ensure the workforce could access training facilitated by CPI on Safety Intervention™ and Clinical Holding, so the workforce felt confident and skilled in meeting increasing demands that traditionally was not expected of the paediatric setting.”

“There has been national recognition of the changes in presentations on the paediatric wards and there has been a drive to upskill the workforce around the paediatric setting to support the management of children with mental health and emotional needs.”
