From MAPA® to Safety & Verbal Intervention

Following feedback and consultation with our Certified Instructors, alongside our schedule of regular evaluations in line with international best practice, we have reviewed and developed our existing MAPA® training programme.

Why the change from MAPA®

We have taken the term MAPA® which was used to describe the full curriculum and divided it into two distinct programmes:

  • Verbal Interventionis the programme that enables you to teach all the CPI preventative approaches
  • Safety Interventionis the programme that enables you to teach all the CPI preventative interventions plus the disengagements and/or holding skills.

Dividing the MAPA® curriculum into these two distinct programmes gives a clearer focus on prevention and addresses concerns that the MAPA® programme was only about ‘restraint’.

In addition, changing the previous programme that involved physical interventions to Safety Intervention™ helps to reinforce that restrictive interventions should only be used as a last resort to maximise safety and minimise harm.

If you’ve only just completed a MAPA® training programme, or are scheduled to attend a course in the next few weeks, don’t worry, the content remains relevant and the way you deliver it is still effective for staff.

When it is time for you to renew, you’ll be transitioned to CPI Safety Intervention but, until then, you can continue delivering the MAPA® programme and CPI will continue to support you with this delivery.

You can also begin to teach Safety Intervention even if you haven’t attended your renewal. Please note, there is no requirement for you to recertify as a Certified Instructor outside of your established recertification timing.

Safety Intervention will be available for new Instructors and those undertaking renewals from April 2021.

Key improvements to MAPA®

1. Care, Welfare, Safety and Security has been removed as a learning objective. These values and philosophy are integrated into each module of the course.

2. The course is underpinned by Trauma-Informed Care and person-centred approaches.

3. The course has been reviewed and redesigned with the help and support of people with lived experience (and their families) of distress and crisis as well as the use of restrictive practices to ensure the content reflects their perspectives.

4. The course has been reviewed and redesigned following a review of the current research and the recommendation of an international panel of experts (leading researchers, academics and professionals).

5. The ‘My Safety and Support Plan’ has been developed by people with lived experience as a template to help learners develop individual Trauma-Informed, Personal-Centred support plans.

6. The ‘Keep me Safe’ booklets have been developed by people with lived experience to provide an easier read, with pictorial information about the restrictive interventions.

7. The concept that all behaviour is communication, and that distress behaviour is a specific form of communication, is introduced and used throughout the course.

8. The term ‘Person in Distress’ replaces the term ‘Individual in Crisis’ to help staff focus on a trauma sensitive person-centred approach which eliminates or minimises the use of restrictive interventions

9. ‘Safety Intervention’ replaces the term ‘Physical Intervention.’ This emphasises the need for staff to think about safety when faced with risk behaviour rather than restraint as a first option. Dividing Safety Interventions into ‘non-restrictive’ and ‘restrictive’ helps reinforce this.

10.Verbal Intervention™ and Safety Intervention™ can now be delivered using a blended approach (online course plus classroom application; or traditionally as a face-to-face classroom event. A blended approach reduces the total learner time by approximately 25%.

11.Learner materials have been redesigned to improve learner engagement. Additional resources have been included in the materials.

12.Instructor materials have been redesigned to make teaching the programme easier.
